Dominique R. Draper is a visionary filmmaker whose work centers on honoring human stories with depth, dignity, and emotional truth. As the writer, director, and one of the producers of The Day You Find Your Name, Dominique brings an intimate and cinematic lens to the untold story of Afeni Shakur; a revolutionary, a mother, and a woman who helped shape history from the shadows.

Born and raised in Houston, TX, with roots in Memphis, Dominique’s Southern background informs a storytelling voice grounded in lived experience, cultural legacy, and generational strength. A first-generation college graduate and senior at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Dominique is passionate about using film to amplify voices often excluded from the mainstream.

The Day You Find Your Name is both a tribute and a challenge, to reframe how we see Black women in revolutionary movements.

The film is a love letter to resilience, to motherhood, and to the lifelong journey of self-discovery.

As someone passionate about highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of women in history, Afeni Shakur’s story deeply resonates with me.

Growing up in China, I have seen how significant female figures are often overshadowed, which has fueled my commitment to female empowerment and to highlighting underrepresented voices through visual storytelling.

Afeni’s life exemplifies strength, resilience, and justice.

It is a story that must be told. Her journey is not only inspirational but also crucial in honoring the revolutionary women in movements throughout history.
